Description

The Ultratec Energy Recovery Device is engineered to recover up to 50% of the energy in high-pressure RO concentrate streams and reuse it to pressurize incoming feedwater. The device uses a Rotary Pressure Exchanger (PX) technology, widely used in seawater and brackish water RO plants, ensuring high efficiency and long-term reliability.

This system is suitable for:

  • Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) plants
  • High-recovery Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO) plants
  • Industrial and municipal RO facilities
  • The ERD is skid-mounted, compact, and compatible with existing RO infrastructure, providing a plug-and-play solution with minimal maintenance.

Process Design & Operating Philosophy

  • The ERD captures high-pressure energy from the concentrate stream and transfers it directly to the feedwater.
  • Designed for continuous operation, it maintains stable hydraulic performance across varying flow rates.
  • Reduces high-pressure pump energy demand, cutting operational power costs by up to 50%.
  • Includes automatic monitoring of pressure, flow, and torque to protect membranes and pumps.
  • Operates reliably under variable feedwater conditions, including temperature and salinity fluctuations.

Pretreatment & Integration Requirements

To ensure optimal ERD performance:

  • Feedwater pretreatment (sand filters, multimedia, carbon filters) is recommended to remove suspended solids.
  • RO membranes should be protected with antiscalants and proper pH adjustment.
  • Avoid high iron, manganese, or organics that could increase abrasion or fouling.
  • Integration with upstream RO feed pump and downstream high-pressure lines is essential.
  • Recommended for both new RO plants and retrofitting existing systems for energy savings.
