The purpose of water filters is to get rid of undesirable minerals and particles like rust, sand, silt, etc. Filters are divided into groups according to their micron level and size; the larger the filter, the greater the flow rates. A 25-micron filter has bigger apertures than a 5-micron filter, allowing larger particles to pass through. The micron level refers to the size of the openings in the filter medium.
